About DJ Captain Charles
Charles Leach, know to the people of New Orleans as DJ Captain Charles, has been in the business of DJ for more than 20 years. Captain Charles is a native of the Magnolia Housing Development now know as Harmony Oaks. He started doing this job at Booker T. Washington High School when they had their talent shows. He would spin for the intermission. At the same time, he was in an R&B group called Unique. The name Captain Charles came from him wearing captain style hats to every event that he was a part of.
Captain Charles was asked to play at all sorts of events including schools, fraternity parties, and homecoming. He was so motivated in doing what he did, that at the time, he went with one turntable and several albums that he borrowed from people in the neighborhood. Captain Charles was asked to do his first deejay upon graduating from high school (Walter L. Cohen). The party was at a club called Two Brothers. The club back then was located on Magazine St.
The captain was very excited but very nervous. So when he got there, he was greeted with one shock, the owner of the club was a Cuban lady. So after smiling and speaking, her only request was a mixture of Latin and American music. American music, he was very familiar with but the Latin, not at all.
In the 1990’s, the Captain was asked to play at various clubs including; A Touch of Class, Excalibur, and Discovery just to name a few. At each location and each time, the crowds grew. This job was such a passion for him that it never bothered him of the number of people. In traveling to all the different clubs, he was introduced to a number of celebrities like Ghetto Boyz, Al B Sure, Dougie E. Fresh and the legendary Slick Rick.
The Captain has played for many big events such as BET Comic view with Sheryl Underwood, Jazz Fest, Zulu Club, Harrah’s Casino, Bally’s Casino, House of Blues, Tom Joyner Cruise, and of course Essence. Captain Charles has opened shows up for the legendary Maze, Cameo, and Charlie Wilson.
